Tribute to Niall

Created by Anne 16 years ago
This fund has been created in memory of our dear son and brother, Niall Largey, who died on the 23rd July 2004. Niall had just completed a history degree and was studying for a masters when he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 1994 age 21 years. He defied his initial prognosis by surviving for ten years. He was a fun loving, witty and humorous person who coped with his increasing disabilities with amazing courage and faced each new obstacle without flinching. Although confined to a wheel-chair, he maintained an astonishing independence - socialising, reading, operating his music centres, ordering through mail-order, making our home a centre of advice and fun for all. He was a true historian; all through his illness, reading, researching and keeping pace with world developments. Laughter was like music that followed him everywhere. Many of us, through being in his presence, were inspired to do things we would never before have contemplated. We all have wonderful memories of Niall; his courage, dignity and strength, his mischievous grin, his raised eyebrow and sharp wit. Niall aspired to live an ordinary life, his ability to do so made him an extraordinary person. "While motor neurone disease is an awful condition, Niall's spirit triumphed over all his afflictions. Never once did he complain to me. I will always remember Niall and his memory will be special to me." (Dr. Stanley Hawkins R.V.H.) "Niall, I think you know how much I miss you. I will never forget your kindness, laughter, cheeky spirit and unbelievable strength and courage. Look out for me from heaven. Hope they have Sky T.V. up there for the football! I love you dearly and will never forget you" (Emma C.) We have created this fund in Niall's name and hope that the contributions made will lead to a cure for this terrible disease.
